In case you’ve exhausted your favorite cocktail during the Stay-at-Home orders, here are couple cocktail recipes just in time for the long holiday weekend! I have loved these cocktails for quite sometime… meaning long before this quarantine. I’m titling this “quarantine cocktails” because these are the ones I have been enjoying making the past couple of months. Every time I make it to the store, I get PLENTY of limes.
I do enjoy a really good margarita. Fresh juices, not too sweet, not artificial tasting, good tequila etc… When you go to some restaurants and order one, you never really know what you are going to get. A couple of places I have found over the years have really good ones. For example, Limone’s in Asheville. Their Coconut margarita and their cucumber one are two of my personal favorites. They go down a little too quickly if you know what I mean. During the old days (haha, before Coronavirus) during spring and summer, I’d try to have one of these waiting for Allen on Friday nights. I know, very June Cleaver of me. Margaritas are definitely his go-to cocktail of choice.
From the 1955 ‘Good House Wife’s Guide’ that explains how wives should treat their husbands. Hahaha!
I, also, decided to link some cocktail shakers. I don’t know about you but most are awful. They either leak or the lid sticks or both! We’ve probably been though 5 or so during the course of our marriage. Some are well-rated from various websites and some I have added because I just think are just really nice looking but I couldn’t find reviews on them yet.
Fresh Margarita
Makes one drink
1/2-1 tbsp agave
2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1 oz. fresh squeezed orange juice
2 oz of your favorite tequila
1 oz triple sec or cointreau or your favorite orange liquor
Lime La Croix or any lime sparkling water
Either in a glass or a shaker mix all ingredients except for the sparkling water. Stir vigorously with a soon in your glass to make sure the agave combines with the other ingredients. If you like it shaken, add crushed ice to the shaker and shake well. Pour over crushed ice and top with lime sparkling water, to taste. I usually do anywhere from 2-4 ozs.
I have a few other Margarita recipes on the blog that we love including Blood-Orange Habanero and Champagne Margaritas.
If you saw my Instagram last week you saw the Samurai. It was a drink Allen and I had in Mexico a couple of years back at Unico, a resort in the Rivera Maya. Their sushi restaurant had these drinks on the menu and we put down quite a few on vacation that week. Allen was determined that we recreate them at home. Normally I mix the cocktails but I let him figure this one out. For us, it really needed to be a pretty exact recipe because it can be way too sweet or on the other end of the spectrum- way too bitter. I’m not a huge sake girl either. The first I actually had good sake was in New York with some friends. I let them order since I knew nothing about sake. It was delicious! After a few bottles going down quite smoothly I checked the bill and realized why it was so good. I was a sake girl but only if it was really expensive. So needless to say, I did not try sake again for a long time while my wallet recovered!
Samurai
Makes one drink
2 tbsp light brown sugar
4 ozs (divided into 2-2oz) sake
2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
In a microwave- safe container ( I use this glass measuring cup) heat the brown sugar and 2 ozs of the sake for 10-15 seconds in the microwave. Remove and add brown sugar- sake mixture plus additional sake and lime juice to a shaker with crushed ice. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds then pour in glass with more crushed ice. We have done it without the shaker but I do find it is just better shaken, not stirred. Enjoy!
